In mid 2020, builders were working at premises in South Street in Hull, when nearly 6,900 pawn shop tickets fell out of the chimney stack they were knocking out. The tickets were from Robert Colliers pawn shop whose shop occupied the site from 1878 to 1898. The tickets seemed to hidden deliberately and dated from 1887 to 1896 and they were in good condition. This remarkable discovery was the inspiration for this book. Volunteers at Carnegie Heritage Centre analysed the tickets and Christine PInder researched the life and times of Robert Collier, the socio-economic conditions of the time, pawnbroking legislation and other pawnbroking businesses. An appendix shows detailed analysis of the pawn shop customers, where they lived and what they pawned and how much they received. A very interesting, even fascinating read.
